The Cross-Arab Connection Between Qatar’s Boualam Khoukhi & Egypt

Qatar’s Boualam Khoukhi, who gave the Gulf nation its first-ever World Cup point, trained under Hassan Shehata.

Qatari defender Boualam Khoukhi wrote himself into the World Cup history books on Saturday evening, becoming the first Arab player to find the net at the 2026 edition of the tournament. His goal against Switzerland didn't just put Qatar on the scoresheet — it earned Al-Annabi their first-ever World Cup point. The moment carried a second layer of history. It was only Qatar's second goal in World Cup final-round history, following Mohammed Muntari's strike against Senegal at the 2022 edition. Khoukhi began his professional career at Qatari club Al-Arabi in 2009, going on to represent the club for several years before making the move to Al-Sadd in the summer of 2017 on a contract running through 2027. Since joining Al-Sadd, he has maintained a consistently high level — contributing to a string of domestic and continental titles along the way. It was during his time at Al-Arabi that Khoukhi crossed paths with Egyptian coach Hassan Shehata, who took charge of the club in 2012. Shehata arrived in early October of that year, but his stint proved difficult — the team failed to win a single league match under him, losing four and drawing two, while managing just two victories in cup competition. Khoukhi was born on September 7th, 1990, in Bou Ismaïl, a city in Algeria's Tipaza Province, before later acquiring Qatari citizenship and representing the national team. He was a key figure in Qatar's historic 2019 AFC Asian Cup triumph — the nation's first-ever continental title — and has since featured for the side across several international tournaments, including the Copa América and the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
